In a disturbing development at Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College in New Delhi, 13 Hindu female MBBS students have come forward with allegations of physical abuse and sexual harassment against Assistant Professor Saleem Sheikh. The grave accusations have ignited a firestorm of public outrage, leading to protests and calls for justice outside the college premises.

The controversy surfaced on Monday when Mahila Nyay Smiti organized a protest to bring attention to the alleged misconduct by Sheikh, who is accused of targeting Hindu female students with inappropriate questions, unwarranted physical contact, and sexual advances. This has not only caused a stir among the student community but also triggered widespread condemnation from various sectors of society.

News reports detail how Dharmender Suri, a participant in the protests, expressed the community’s collective disdain for Sheikh’s reprehensible actions, which have tarnished the educational institution’s reputation. The protests saw a large turnout, with demonstrators demanding the assistant professor’s immediate dismissal and legal action against him.

The allegations came to light following complaints lodged by two students who claimed to have been sexually harassed by Sheikh during an MBBS viva session on January 31. Despite filing a police report on February 22, the protesting groups have criticized the sluggish response from authorities and the lack of significant action taken against the accused.

The slogan “We will not allow BSA Medical College to become another ‘Sandeshkhali'” was a rallying cry among protesters, reflecting their determination to fight against harassment and injustice in educational institutions. The reference to “Sandeshkhali” is a metaphorical expression of their resolve to prevent any form of violence or harassment from taking root in their college.

The National Commission for Women has also stepped in, calling for an immediate investigation under the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace Act, 2013. This incident highlights a concerning trend of crimes against Hindu women, prompting demands for more robust protection mechanisms and accountability.

The situation outside Baba Saheb Ambedkar Medical College remains tense, with police deployed to maintain order as the community seeks justice for the victims. The case has also drawn attention to the broader issue of sexual harassment in educational settings, emphasizing the need for stringent measures to safeguard students’ rights and dignity.
