In a shocking incident in Sanjay Nagar, Kurar Village, Malad (East) of Mumbai, a 30-year-old teacher became the victim of a brutal assault by a 22-year-old local resident identified as Mohammad Haroon Idrishi, also known as Chaman. The assailant, reportedly enraged over the teacher’s rejection of his marriage proposal, attacked her with an iron rod, leaving her critically injured. The victim is currently hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a nearby medical facility.

According to reports from the Free Press Journal, the attack occurred after the teacher declined Chaman’s marriage proposal, leading him to assault her with a rod in a fit of rage. The victim, whose identity has been withheld, sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to the ICU of Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Kandivali for urgent medical treatment.

The timeline of events reveals a troubling delay in police response, with authorities arriving at the scene approximately five hours after the assault was reported. By this time, the assailant had fled, leaving the victim in a vulnerable state.

It has been reported that Chaman had a history of allegedly stalking the victim since 2021, raising concerns over the adequacy of measures to protect individuals from persistent harassment and threats. Despite the victim lodging several complaints in the past, the police failed to take appropriate action against the accused.

Following extensive efforts by law enforcement agencies, Mohammad Haroon Idrishi alias Chaman was apprehended on Sunday and taken into custody. A case has been filed against him under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), and he has been remanded to police custody until April 4, as confirmed by the Kurar Police to a news agency.

This disturbing incident highlights the urgent need for stronger measures to address stalking and harassment cases, ensuring the safety and security of individuals, especially women, who are vulnerable to such attacks.
