In a distressing turn of events, a Hindu woman from Ward No. 2 of Bolpur municipality in Birbhum district, West Bengal, has come forward with allegations of torture and intimidation by the local police and a Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor. Durga Roy recounted a harrowing ordeal in which she claims to have been subjected to verbal abuse, physical assault, and the demolition of her family’s temple.

According to Roy, the trouble began when she resisted attempts by the land mafia, led by Sheikh Hasan, to encroach upon her property. She alleges that with the assistance of local councillor Chandan Mandal and the complicity of the police, Hasan’s illegal construction activities were allowed to proceed unchecked.

Roy’s account paints a grim picture of lawlessness and collusion, with authorities allegedly ignoring court orders and turning a blind eye to illegal activities. Despite presenting a court order prohibiting construction on her land, Roy claims that her pleas were disregarded, and her temple was demolished.

In response to the ordeal, Roy has submitted a formal complaint to the Birbhum Superintendent of Police, seeking justice and protection from further threats. Her courageous act of speaking out against the injustice she has faced underscores the urgent need for accountability and protection of fundamental rights in West Bengal.

As allegations of abuse of power and religious persecution continue to surface, it is imperative for authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into Roy’s claims and ensure that justice is served. The safety and security of all citizens, regardless of their religious affiliation, must be upheld to preserve the fabric of democracy and rule of law in the region.
