A distressing incident of intolerance and violence has surfaced in Bikaner, Rajasthan, where members of an SC (Scheduled Caste) Hindu family were brutally assaulted by individuals allegedly motivated by religious bigotry.

The ordeal began when Sumit Dharu, son of Sanjay Valmiki, entered into a love marriage with Sania on 22nd December 2023. However, on 10th March, their happiness was shattered when Zakir Hussain Shaikh and three other family members, accompanied by a group of 10-15 individuals, stormed Sumit’s residence in Vinoba Basti Hal Rajiv Nagar Bikaner.

The assailants subjected Sumit’s father to physical assault before forcibly seizing Sania and taking her away. The shocking attack has prompted outrage and condemnation from the local community, highlighting the alarming rise of religious intolerance in society.

The Gangshahar police station has initiated legal action against the accused, with RPS Himanshu Sharma spearheading the investigation into the matter. The incident underscores the need for swift and decisive measures to address such acts of violence and uphold the principles of justice and equality.

In recent times, instances of Hindu-Muslim marriages have faced opposition and hostility from extremist elements, leading to tragic consequences for the couples involved. The incident in Bikaner serves as a stark reminder of the grave consequences of religious intolerance and underscores the imperative of fostering a culture of mutual respect and understanding in society.

As the investigation progresses, it is crucial for authorities to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice and that measures are taken to prevent such acts of violence and discrimination in the future. Upholding the rights and dignity of individuals, regardless of their religious or caste affiliations, is essential for fostering a harmonious and inclusive society where all citizens can live without fear of persecution or discrimination.
