In the run-up to the Lok Sabha polls, allegations of women assault in Santipur, West Bengal, have surfaced, with a purported TMC supporter accused of molesting women in the area. BJP candidate Jagannath Sarkar highlighted complaints against the accused, reportedly a TMC supporter named Pradeep Sarkar, alleging inaction by authorities despite repeated notifications.

The incident unfolded in the Karamchapur area of Bagachapur village panchayat within Santipur police station jurisdiction. Sarkar claimed Pradeep Sarkar had a history of indecent behavior towards women, entering houses at night to molest them. Despite numerous complaints, no action had been taken, Sarkar asserted, adding that Pradeep was recently caught attempting to molest a woman but fled upon being confronted.

Local residents echoed Sarkar’s sentiments, expressing frustration over the lack of action against Pradeep due to his alleged TMC affiliation. Sanji Sarkar recounted a recent incident where Pradeep attempted to misbehave with women in his house under the cover of darkness. Concerns were raised about the purportedly close relationship between the officer-in-charge of Santipur police station and Pradeep, fueling suspicions of preferential treatment.

In response, TMC MLA Braj Kishore Goswami acknowledged the severity of the incidents and called for Pradeep’s arrest while also highlighting the political dynamics at play, pointing out that the concerned panchayat is under BJP administration.

Ranaghat Superintendent of Police Kumar Saniraj emphasized that complaints had been filed from both sides, urging against politicizing the issue. He assured that investigations were ongoing to address the matter impartially.

The situation underscores the intersection of political affiliations and law enforcement in addressing incidents of violence against women, highlighting the need for swift and impartial action to ensure justice and safety for all citizens, especially vulnerable groups.
